May 2018 BOWDA Lunch: Olympic Bid Update, Lisa de Soto, CAO of the Town of Canmore
The Town of Canmore has been exploring the potential of partnering with the City of Calgary in a bid to host the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (OPWG). Recently, the Federal and Provincial governments have agreed to financially support the Bid Corporation (BidCo), with the Province’s support conditional upon a plebiscite being held to gauge public opinion and support.
The City of Calgary and Town of Canmore Councils have approved moving forward with the BidCo. Calgary has invited Canmore to a seat on the BidCo board, along with representatives of the City of Calgary, Provincial and Federal governments, Canadian Olympic Committee, and Canadian Paralympic Committee. This position on the BidCo board gives Canmore the opportunity to get the information it needs to ultimately make a decision on whether or not to participate as the Mountain Host for the 2026 OPWG.
Lisa de Soto, CAO for the Town of Canmore will be our representative on the BidCo board. Come to the BOWDA lunch on Thursday, May 10th to get an update from Lisa on the PyeongChang Observer Program, the bid process, the principles that the Town will use to evaluate a potential bid, and the potential benefits and impacts of being the Mountain Host community for the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
