BOWDA Luncheon on Thursday, November 10, 2016.
Topic: Climate Change in the Bow Valley
We now have an analysis of the Bow Valley’s future climate, which Dr. Mel Reasoner will present on Nov 10. The climate projections are based on analysis of historic data from six surrounding climate stations (Golden, Lake Louise, Banff, Kananaskis, Calgary and Olds) and current modelling from the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) at the University of Victoria. This information is an essential key piece in understanding the future climate of the Bow Valley and helping us prepare for those changes.
We’ve seen climate impacts intensify with extreme wildfires and droughts becoming increasingly common alongside low snowpack levels that affect water supplies. Many sectors are struggling under these changing conditions including the development community and tourism. How will you prepare your business for a changing climate and climate disruption events?
Climate fueled droughts, floods, fires and other extreme weather events are putting heavy pressure on roads, municipal water systems, bridges, buildings, homes and businesses. Municipalities face the added burden of having more financial responsibility for infrastructure that protects residents from climate impacts.
Warmer, dryer, less precipitation as snow – increased forest fire risk, increased risk of drought, increased variability – how will your product change as a result? e.g. HVAC/mechanical systems that respond to warmer summers; fire resistant buildings; landscaping and fixtures to increase water conservation. There will be increased risks, but there may be additional opportunities as well; these are also important to consider, e.g. longer construction season.
Climate fluency (i.e. a basic understanding of the changing climate) will enhance your ability to be a quality professional; and this understanding will also set the stage for planning your response and how you will adapt your business to address the risks and opportunities of a changing climate.
