Canmore's Transportation and Flood Resiliency Projects

On September 14^th, Andy Esarte, Manager of Engineering Services with the Town of Canmore, will be presenting on ongoing transportation and flood protection projects happening around Canmore.
 
Engineering Services is responsible for planning and capital project delivery for Canmore’s transportation system.  Projects in recent years have focused on managing peak traffic by providing transportation alternatives like local and regional transit service, and infrastructure for walking and cycling.  By providing alternatives, room is created on the roads for those that need to or choose to drive – while allowing for street designs that are attractive, safe, and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities.

Recently we have caught a glimpse of what the Town of Canmore has planned for future transportation initiatives. The Main Street entrance to downtown Canmore and Spring Creek Drive and the Bow Valley Trail walking and cycling lane are examples of the Town's plan for "complete streets". Now that it has started, find out what the plans are to expand complete streets.
 
The extreme rainfall of 2013 highlighted Canmore’s risk of debris flood and debris flow from steep creeks in our mountainous terrain.  This is a common hazard in mountainous regions throughout the world.  Canmore has adopted a risk based approach to assessing creeks, and has adopted mitigation approaches appropriate for these hazards based on the experience of countries in the European Alps.  These approaches contribute to the safety and sustainability of our community.
